Artist's Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''The Sand Pebbles'', a 1966 American war film directed by Robert Wise. It is based on the novel of the same name by Richard McKenna and is set in China during the 1920s, depicting a period of political turmoil and revolution.
The film stars Steve McQueen as Jake Holman, a U.S. Navy machinist's mate assigned to a gunboat named the USS San Pablo, which patrols the Yangtze River. His initial goal is to simply serve his tour of duty and keep the ship's engine running. However, as he becomes more integrated into the crew and learns about the complexities of the situation in China, he becomes deeply involved in the ship's mission.
"The Sand Pebbles" explores themes of cultural clash, imperialism, and the moral dilemmas faced by American servicemen in a foreign land during a time of political upheaval. Jake Holman becomes personally and emotionally invested in the lives of the Chinese people he encounters, leading to conflicts with...
