Description
Idyllic vision of the Australian outback life, showing young women bathing nude in a lake or 'billabong', painted by William B McInnes (1889-1939) in 1916. McInnes went on to become a hugely successful portrait painter in England, later returning to Australia where he became director of the National Gallery of Victoria painting school until his death in 1919. Worth viewing this painting in the light of the 'glare aesthetic' that McInnes, Walter Withers and others developed as a means of conveying the blinding intensity of Australian light.
